St. Petersburg, Peter & Paul Fortress and St. Isaacs Cathedral
Drive to the city center with an introduction to the history of St. Petersburg.  The first stop is at the Cathedral of St. Peter & Paul.  The Peter & Paul Fortress was founded in 1703 to defend the city, and is considered to be the birth place of St. Petersburg.  The Cathedral, designed by Trezini, features a guilded spire stretching more than 380 feet into the sky and is a distinctive, majestic landmark. Continue past the 18th century buildings of the University and across the bridge over the Neva River to the mainland. The next stop is at St. Isaac’s Square.  Here you will visit the St. Isaac’s Cathedral.  The Cathedral, designed by the French Architect Montferrand, is the largest church in St. Petersburg with a capacity of 10,000 people. The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated with different kinds of marble, malachite and other semi-precious stones.

St. Petersburg, Pushkin & Pavlosk
The town of Pushkin, only 50 minutes from your pier contains a marvelous ensemble of palaces and parks. Catherine’s Palace is an ornate masterpiece whose façade is decorated in white, blue and gold. You will see a series of imposing rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery and Great Hall and the recreated Amber Room, whose panels were stolen by the Nazis during the war, smuggled (as legend holds) to Paraguay and lost forever. After lunch, you will proceed on to the Imperial Estate of Pavlovsk and Grand Paul’s Palace, a gift from Catherine the Great to her son Paul on the birth of his son, Alexander. The Grecian Ballroom, adorned with green-fluted Corinthian columns, is probably the palace’s most elegant room. Paul’s rooms are richly adorned with mahogany and heavy gilding while those of his wife pervade a distinctive charm, rather than grandeur. Nearby Pavlovsk Park boasts ponds, valleys, waterfalls and statues and is one of the largest of its type in Europe.

Please note: This excursion is not recommended for persons with walking or climbing difficulties. The palace is not wheelchair accessible due to its steep staircase, absence of elevators and long walking distances. Expect congestion and waiting at attractions. Your tour’s main destination will be the Hermitage Museum – a spectacular landmark which ranks among the world’s finest museums. The Hermitage was created in 1764 by Czarina Catherine the Great. The museum boasts 353 rooms, filled with masterpieces by Raphael, Titan, Giorgione, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and others. Located within the Winter Palace on the banks of the Neva River, the Hermitage Museum is a work of art in itself. St. Petersburg, Through the Eyes of the Russian People
Experience St. Petersburg through the eyes of its inhabitants. One of the popular tourist attractions is to take a ride on the Metro. The Metro's stunning stations were intended by Stalin to be "palaces for the people." Thousands of tons of marble, granite and limestone were used to face the walls, and sculptures, mosaics, and chandeliers were commissioned from leading artists. The first line, opened in 1955 is the most fascinating. You will be shown a few stations and take a short ride on the train where you will be able to take a peek at St. Petersburg's markets and food stores, providing an intriguing insight into local life. Sellers in the market come from all over the former Soviet Union and you will be able to witness a variety of nationalities there and enjoy friendly attitudes. After the visit to the market, stop for souvenir shopping and go to a downtown restaurant specializing in Russian food and hospitality. You will be treated to a variety of vodkas together with traditional Russian condiments served to complement this famous Russian drink. After the vodka sampling, you will return to the ship.

Bergen, Fantoft Stave Church & Greigs Home & Garden

This enriching excursion will take you south of Bergen to view a remarkable wooden church and to visit the home of Norway's famed composer, Edvard Grieg. You will drive through the residential areas south of Bergen, towards Fana and the Stave Church. The old Stave Church at Fantoft was originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150, and was moved to Fantoft in 1883 to save it from demolition and preserve it as part of the nation’s heritage.  After a destructive 1992 fire, artisans extensively and faithfully restored the church to its former beauty. Inside, you can admire the traditional timber construction and elaborately carved decoration. From spiritual faith to musical brilliance, you'll also visit Troldhaugen, home of Norway's famed composer Edvard Grieg.  Troldhaugen was built in 1885 and Edvard Grieg lived there for 22 years together with his wife Nina. Grieg composed many of his best-known works in the composer’s hut by the shore of Lake Nordås. Enjoy a guided tour of the Villa, museum and the garden and some free time to walk around on your own afterwards. Your visit will end with the highlight of the tour; a private recital in Troldsalen. One of the best interpreters of Grieg’s music will play some of the famous pieces as well as some of the more unknown ones, and tell stories and anecdotes about the composer and his wife.

Please note: It is recommended that you dress in layered clothing and wear flat comfortable walking shoes. This tour involves stone steps, uneven ground and gradual slopes.
