Bergen, Fantoft Stave Church & Greigs Home & Garden

This enriching excursion will take you south of Bergen to view a remarkable wooden church and to visit the home of Norway's famed composer, Edvard Grieg. You will drive through the residential areas south of Bergen, towards Fana and the Stave Church. The old Stave Church at Fantoft was originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150, and was moved to Fantoft in 1883 to save it from demolition and preserve it as part of the nation’s heritage.  After a destructive 1992 fire, artisans extensively and faithfully restored the church to its former beauty. Inside, you can admire the traditional timber construction and elaborately carved decoration. From spiritual faith to musical brilliance, you'll also visit Troldhaugen, home of Norway's famed composer Edvard Grieg.  Troldhaugen was built in 1885 and Edvard Grieg lived there for 22 years together with his wife Nina. Grieg composed many of his best-known works in the composer’s hut by the shore of Lake Nordås. Enjoy a guided tour of the Villa, museum and the garden and some free time to walk around on your own afterwards. Your visit will end with the highlight of the tour; a private recital in Troldsalen. One of the best interpreters of Grieg’s music will play some of the famous pieces as well as some of the more unknown ones, and tell stories and anecdotes about the composer and his wife.

Please note: It is recommended that you dress in layered clothing and wear flat comfortable walking shoes. This tour involves stone steps, uneven ground and gradual slopes.

Geiranger: Nordic Walking
Nordic walking began as a summer training exercise for serious ”cross-country” skiers. Fitness walkers in Europe adopted Nordic walking as a time-efficient, low- stress, total body workout and popularity is growing worldwide. Today, you will be invited on this invigorating and exciting walking excursion through the beautiful setting of Geiranger.   You will meet the expert guide at the pier where a briefing on Nordic walking will take place, along with specially designed poles to work the upper body while you walk. Beginning the walk, proceed at a casual walking speed, but experience a full body workout as the walking poles raise the heart rate and exercise the arms.  You will tour the hills and admire the mountain sides of Geiranger. Proceed uphill and over uneven terrain; however, the strenuous walk allows for wonderful views of the countryside. During the walk, stop at the village of Westerås, to enjoy a break, before continuing to Hole. After a brief stop, you will begin the Nordic walk back to the pier.

St. Petersburg, Glories of St. Petersburg
You will board a motor coach for a 50-minute drive to the town of Pushkin and Catherine's Palace, whose grandiose white, blue, and gold façade stretches 978 feet. During World War II, the Palace sustained severe damage but has been restored to its original glory. The Palace's magnificent rooms include the famous Picture Gallery and the Great Hall, as well as the unforgettable Amber Room which sparkles in unparalleled, breathtaking splendor. The park-like grounds are embellished with a number of charming pavilions - among them the Grotto Pavilion and the Hermitage. After lunch you'll head to the Hermitage Museum - the largest art museum in Russia and one of the most prestigious and fabulous museums in the world. Its collection of Western European art is second to none, and the nearly three million objects contained in the Hermitage are, like the building itself, beautiful and seemingly endless.

Please note:  This tour is not recommended for persons with walking or climbing difficulties. There are long walking distances through the Gardens of Pushkin. Catherine’s Palace is not wheelchair accessible due to the steep staircases and no elevators. There is extensive walking between different parts of the Hermitage. Expect congestion and waiting at attractions. Guests in wheelchairs must advise the Shore Excursion Desk ahead of time in order to pre-arrange the use of the elevators in the Hermitage, which are not accessible to all visitors.

St. Petersburg, Pushkin & Pavlosk
The town of Pushkin, only 50 minutes from your pier contains a marvelous ensemble of palaces and parks. Catherine’s Palace is an ornate masterpiece whose façade is decorated in white, blue and gold. You will see a series of imposing rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery and Great Hall and the recreated Amber Room, whose panels were stolen by the Nazis during the war, smuggled (as legend holds) to Paraguay and lost forever. After lunch, you will proceed on to the Imperial Estate of Pavlovsk and Grand Paul’s Palace, a gift from Catherine the Great to her son Paul on the birth of his son, Alexander. The Grecian Ballroom, adorned with green-fluted Corinthian columns, is probably the palace’s most elegant room. Paul’s rooms are richly adorned with mahogany and heavy gilding while those of his wife pervade a distinctive charm, rather than grandeur. Nearby Pavlovsk Park boasts ponds, valleys, waterfalls and statues and is one of the largest of its type in Europe.

Please note: This excursion is not recommended for persons with walking or climbing difficulties. The palace is not wheelchair accessible due to its steep staircase, absence of elevators and long walking distances. Expect congestion and waiting at attractions. St. Petersburg, The Hermitage
Your tour’s main destination will be the Hermitage Museum – a spectacular landmark which ranks among the world’s finest museums. The Hermitage was created in 1764 by Czarina Catherine the Great. Her original purchase of 225 canvasses by Dutch and Flemish masters provided the nucleus of today's collection, which consists of almost 3 million exhibits and represents many cultures. The museum boasts 353 rooms, filled with masterpieces by Raphael, Titan, Giorgione, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and others. Located within the Winter Palace on the banks of the Neva River, the Hermitage Museum is a work of art in itself. Pay special attention to the spectacular staircases, marble structures, malachite columns and highly decorated floors and ceilings, in this former residence of mighty Russian czars.

Please note: Flash photography is not allowed in the Hermitage Museum. The Hermitage requires extensive walking and stair climbing and there may be lines and delays between galleries. St. Petersburg, Through the Eyes of the Russian People
Experience St. Petersburg through the eyes of its inhabitants. One of the popular tourist attractions is to take a ride on the Metro. The Metro's stunning stations were intended by Stalin to be "palaces for the people." Thousands of tons of marble, granite and limestone were used to face the walls, and sculptures, mosaics, and chandeliers were commissioned from leading artists. The first line, opened in 1955 is the most fascinating. You will be shown a few stations and take a short ride on the train where you will be able to take a peek at St. Petersburg's markets and food stores, providing an intriguing insight into local life. Sellers in the market come from all over the former Soviet Union and you will be able to witness a variety of nationalities there and enjoy friendly attitudes. After the visit to the market, stop for souvenir shopping and go to a downtown restaurant specializing in Russian food and hospitality. You will be treated to a variety of vodkas together with traditional Russian condiments served to complement this famous Russian drink. After the vodka sampling, you will return to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves considerable walking and is not recommended for persons with walking or climbing difficulties. Metro is not wheelchair accessible due to the steep staircase, absence of elevators and long walking distances. Tour timetable may vary due to the traffic conditions.
