Bastia, Bastia & Taste Of Corsica
Bastia was founded by the Genoese in 1380, when they were looking for a naturally sheltered port to replace the ancient Roman city of Mariana and Biguglia (which had been destroyed by the Corsicans in 1372). The Genoese needed a city and port which could ensure contact between their “homeland” and their “colony.” Even if this small port was swept by terrible  winds, it was protected by a rock, easily defensible, and upon which a dungeon (or bastiglia) was built- and hence the name of the town Bastua. You will be met by your tour guide for a walking visit of the old City and the citadel . During your city tour by foot you will enjoy a stop for a Corsican spuntinu and tasting of Corsican specialties.

Bastia, Corsican Tales And Legends
Bastia was founded by the Genoese in 1380, when they were looking for a naturally sheltered port to replace the ancient Roman city of Mariana and Biguglia (which had been destroyed by the Corsicans in 1372).  They needed a city and port which could assure the contact between their “Homeland” and their “colony”. Even if this small port was swept by terrible winds, it was protected by a rock,  easily defensible, and upon which a dungeon (or bastiglia) was built- and hence the name of the town Bastia. The numerous religious buildings dotted all over the island bear witness to the profound religious fervor of its inhabitants and their attachment to the Catholic faith. Despite this, the collective consciousness remains steeped in many pagan traditions, with relics of ancient beliefs. The mystical spirit of Corsica finds its true expression during the great Christian festivals, however the barrier between the natural and supernatural world is extremely permeable and Corsica is teeming with visionaries, faith healers, and mediums. This walking tour will take you to some purportedly haunted sites, and give you an overview of the superstitions and local legends which still hold sway.

Bastia, Corte
In the heart of the island, half way between Ajaccio and Bastia stands Corte, raised slightly above the floor of the valley by its position on a hill. On the eastern slope, the quarters of the old town rise in steps up to the ramparts of the Citadel which, perched on a rock outcrop, towers over the confluence of three rivers. Being the only inland military stronghold in Corsica, Corte established itself as the strategic crossroads, controlling all of the inland areas of the island.  You will board a little train which will bring you up to the city of Corté.  Your tour will  begin at the end of Cours Paoli in Place du Duc de Padoue and the statue of Jean Thomas Arrighi de Casanova .  Just above here is the Place Poilu where Napoleon's parents once lived. To the left you will see the Palais National, the administrative building that’s ground floor was for a long time used as a prison. With the re-establishment and inauguration of a new university in Corte in 1981, the Palais National became a Centre for Corsican Studies and now houses that institution's library.  You will climb steps which follow the walls of the citadel, and reach a viewing point with a magnificent view of Corte and its environs. The rocky outcrop of the citadel can clearly be seen, as can the Eagle's Nest built in 1419 by the viceroy of Corsica. Today the citadel houses the Musée de la Corse and the Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain. You will have time to take a stroll by yourself for souvenir shopping,

Bastia, Patrimonio & Island Wine Tasting
Your journey from Bastia will lead inland to Oletta – a small village terraced up the hillside, and from where there is a lovely view of Saint Florent and over  the countryside of olive groves, vineyards, and pastures – small squares of property delimited by dry stone walls. Then the road climbs up to the San Stefano Pass, through chestnut and olive groves, and from there is a spectacular panorama down to the east coast and the Biguglia “étang” (pool) and in the other direction, across the Agriates Desert and the sea at Saint Florent.  You will climba sinuous, narrow road, up to the Teghime Pass, where at an altitude of 1,759 feet ( 536M), the views are completely different in each direction. To the West: over extensive vineyards right to the gulf of Saint Florent. To the South: across mountains and valleys towards the chestnut forests of the Castagniccia. The East: past Bastia and the sea leading to Italy. Finally North: the mountainous backbone of the Cap Corse. The road turns and twists its way down to Patrimonio, offering picturesque views background. Patrimonio village is dominated by its church and high steeple (built in 1749). Of course, it would be impossible to be in the finest wine producing region of the island, without having a wine-tasting session!

Following your tour, you will have free time to browse the local shops or enjoy a cafe. Reboard your boat and proceed to the next stop, the most westerly village and Cinque Terre's beach town, Monterosso. Santa Margherita, Paradise Gulf & Portofino by Private Chartered Boat
Depart on an exploration of the history and culture of this region of the Italian Coast aboard a private boat. Your first stop will be in the little bay of the village of San Fruttuoso, famous for its 10th century abbey—the ancient residence of the Doria family. The fascination of San Fruttuoso lies in the architectural value of the abbey and church as well as in its splendid natural surroundings. The cliffs encircling the inlet, the small beach, the rich Mediterranean vegetation and the almost-unreal absence of vehicles create a truly unique and enjoyable atmosphere. Enjoy the view while staying on the boat for 10 minutes inside the bay. Continuing up the coast, you will arrive at Camogli, a small, typical fishing village, once the site of bustling shipyards that helped build one of the world’s greatest merchant fleets. Camogli’s original medieval setting was centered around the local parish church, located on an island that was completely detached from the mainland. Today, this island is connected to the mainland by a little square surrounded by colorful buildings and one of the most beautiful Baroque churches along the Italian coastline. Here, you will take a guided tour through the village and have some free time on your own. Focaccia bread and local wine will be served on your boat ride back to Portofino. With your guide, you will take a short walking tour of the town. Stroll to the Church of San Giorgio and enjoy some free time to browse on your own, before you return to Santa Margherita.

Please note: Wear comfortable clothes. Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. This tour is a visit to some of the more charming and remote fishing villages in the area. The tour will end back in Santa Margherita. Guests who prefer to remain in Portofino for additional time at leisure must make their own way back to Santa Margherita.
