Start your journey through Melanesia in lovely Lautoka, Fiji with a visit to Nadi Temple or the South Sea Orchid Garden followed by a relaxing mud pool bath before diving into the crystal clear waters of Yasawa-I-Rara Island. Upon arriving in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, sink your teeth into fresh seasonal fruit at Mama’s Market, feel the mist of Mele Cascades waterfall, hit beautiful Jade Beach, or hop on the boat to Tranquility Island to visit the Hawksbill Turtle Sanctuary. The adventure continues at Lifou’s Jokin Cliffs and Jinek Beach in New Caledonia. This fossilized coral atoll is the center of traditional Melanesian culture. “The Closest Island to Paradise,” Ile de Pins, was once a penal colony and is now appreciated by all for it’s turquoise waters full of colorful coral, white-sand beaches, and tall native pine trees. Alas the journey concludes in Noumea, the World War II headquarters for the U.S. military in the South Pacific. The capital of New Caledonia, Noumea offers magnificent beaches and incredible views from its string of beautiful bays.

Day 1: Noumea
During World War II, Noumea was the headquarters for the U.S. military in the South Pacific, whose influence lingers today in the names of places and the general feeling of goodwill toward the U.S. The capital of New Caledonia offers magnificent beaches and incredible views from several bays that extend along the city.  Look for the Aquarium des Lagoons, Noumea Cathedral, Coconut Palm Square and Jean-Marie Tijbaou Cultural Center.

Day 2: Iles de Pins
  • This beautiful island, nicknamed “The Closest Island to Paradise,” is uniquely home to native pines.. Surrounded by turquoise waters full of colorful coral, white-sand beaches, and tropical vegetation including thesetall native pine trees, it is a wonderful place to explore. Highlights here include Notre Dame de L’Assumption Church built in 1860, Grotto of Queen Hortense and St. Joseph’s Bay with its outrigger-style pirogues.

Day 3: Mare, New Caledonia
Mare is home to stunning and varied beaches. Wabao and Kurine are known for their immaculate, fine white sand. Shabadran boasts rugged terrain and Pede Beach is hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches I the world. And there is Tadine, a natural aquarium with its wide array of multi-colored fish, making it a snorkeler’s delight. In addition to the beaches the landscapes of the island offer steep cliffs, dense, wild forests, and delightful little coves on the ground of superimposed coral layers that reach down almost 427 feet (130 meters).

Day 4: Lifou
Lifou is the largest of the Loyalty Islands, a fossilized coral atoll now raised high above sea level and is a center of traditional Melanesian culture. The towering cliffs here, Jokin Cliffs, are made up of layers of compressed coral stone. The Mucaweng Vanilla Plantation is a must-see as is the Jinek Beach for some of the best snorkeling and diving and possibly dolphin and whale watching.

Day 6: Port Vila
Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, offers a downtown with a delightful mix of colorful market stalls selling produce and local crafts and Mama’s Market with fresh seasonal fruit samples. Take a boat to Tranquility Island to see the Hawksbill Turtle Sanctuary there. Or head to Mele Cascades, a multi-tiered waterfall with lovely rock pools or Jade Beach with excellent swimming and snorkeling.

Day 9: Yasawa-I-Rara
This small, hidden island in a group of 6 islands offers a private beautiful beach off the beaten path with crystal-clear waters inviting amazing snorkeling. In 2002 a developer offered to buy one of the islands, which the villagers declined and instead signed an agreement with Seacology prohibiting island development for 20 years and establishing a no-take fishing reserve for 10 years

Day 10: Lautoka
Nicknamed the “Sugar City” due to its expansive sugarcane plantations, Lautoka’s biggest employer is the Lautoka Sugar Mill, founded in 1903. Lautoka is the birthplace of PGA star Vijay Singh and is lovely with its tree-lined streets, colonial homes, outdoor markets and a cheerful, vibrant culture. Sights to see include South Sea Orchid Garden, Sabeto Village and Nadi Marketplace or Temple. This is also the place to make time for a relaxing mud pool bath.
