Star Collector: Endless Days of the North Sea & Iceland

This tour offers a chance to see many of the wonderful highlights of Snæfellsnes  peninsula – an area rich in natural beauty, history and culture. Upon leaving  Grundarfjörður, our journey takes us through the several small fishing villages that hug the dramatic coastline as we head towards the famous glacier Snæfellsjökull which you will admire from a  distance. made popular by the French writer, Jules Verne in his classic novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It is one of the country’s many interesting geological features, but other prominent mountains and volcanoes also grace the area. First stop is Djúpalónssandur beach, where we’ll take a short refreshing walk to a viewing platform that offers spectacular view over the beach and ocean. On the beach we will find the remains of a Grimsby fishing  trawler that was wrecked in hazardous weather in 1948.  After a short drive past the cliffs Lóndrangar, we’ll drive to Malarrif where we will visit the Visitor Centre. After the Visitor Centre we will drive to Arnarstapi village, its idyllic, setting boasts many interesting lava formations and an abundance of birdlife during the summer months. We will make two photo stops during our time there and enjoy refreshments at a  local restaurant. Next, we will head for Búðir, famed for its scenic surroundings of black lava and one of the few yellow sanded beaches in Iceland. We’ll explore and enjoy the area before heading back to Grundarfjörður.
 

This tour begins at the Grundarfjörður pier, where our adventure through the stunning landscapes of West Iceland begins. Our first stop is Kampur, a historic site marked by a Celtic cross that tells a moving story connecting Grundarfjörður to the French town of Paimpol. Here, we dive into the region’s rich and fascinating history before continuing our journey. Next, we travel through the beautiful Kolgrafarfjörður, a paradise for nature lovers. Watch for free-roaming sheep and soak in the dramatic fjord scenery that defines this part of Iceland. A true highlight of the day is our visit to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum. On a guided tour, you’ll learn about the traditional Icelandic method of fermenting shark meat and the history behind shark hunting in the region. For the adventurous, there’s even the chance to sample the famous fermented Greenland shark—best enjoyed with a shot of Brennivín, Iceland’s signature schnapps! After this unforgettable experience, we begin our scenic drive back to the ship, making stops for memorable photos along the way. We visit the legendary Berserkjahraun lava fields, closely tied to the epic Eyrbyggja Saga, enjoy sweeping views from the Vatnaleið viewing platform, and even explore a hidden elven city—a magical finale to an unforgettable day.
