The Balthazar River nestled in an exotic tropical rainforest is fed from sources deep in the island’s interior. Here is your opportunity to have a thrilling river tubing experience on what is known locally as the “Great River.”   You will take a 45-minute journey from St. George’s through the scenic hilly interior of the Grand Etang Rainforest Reserve to the Balthazar Estate. Your arrival will be followed by a safety briefing before you’ll be equipped with a life vest, modified inner tube, and a paddle. You will be accompanied by guides as you gently spin and swirl in the river currents. Marvel at the exotic views of tropical vegetation and wildlife as your thrilling river ride progresses. Several pools along the way provide the perfect opportunity to catch your breath. Finally sample a much-deserved rum punch or local fruit juice. All too soon, it’s time to return to the ship.

The Tower Estate is a unique property that is known as the Downton Abbey of Grenada. From here you can choose to swim in the crystal-clear water, bask in the sun on the pristine white-sand beach, or stay on board and enjoy a complimentary drink. Cruise to Diamond Cay, a tiny islet surrounded by powdery white sand, azure blue waters, and an underwater world filled with colorful marine life. Enjoy the best that Virgin Gorda has to offer when you take this Island Tour to the world famous Baths.  Board your open air safari bus at Gun Creek and wind up the hills to Gorda Peak where you will have the opportunity to photograph the impressive archipelago of the B.V.I.  Your route will take you on down the spine of this beautiful island. From here you will drive to The Baths. These massive granite boulders stand out against powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters, so seize this chance to scramble through narrow gaps, intricate pools and passages which comprise this adventurous footpath before it opens out to the spectacular white sands of Devil’s Bay.  The beach at The Baths boasts an appealing bar, souvenir stand and restrooms.  For those not physically inclined, you can still be witness to these dramatic batholiths should you take a drink at the Top of The Baths, or the less strenuous path direct down to Devils Bay.  Before boarding the safari busses, sample a complimentary rum punch, punch or water at the gazebo above the Baths, and then enjoy the remainder of your circular island tour via Nail Bay with homes of the rich and famous and Hog's Heaven for some stunning shots of the ship anchored in North Sound.

On an air conditioned bus, during this 40-minute ride to the wonderful island of Baru, the newest tourist development area in Colombia, you may sit back and enjoy the scenery of other areas of Cartagena, take a look to the growing industrial area and finally arrive to the National Aviary, one of the best aviaries in the world given its high number of species. Colombia is the country in the world holding the highest bird diversity, with more than 1,900 species and The National Aviary displays an important sample of this variety.  Once you arrive to the National Aviary, you may initiate your tour and explore the different bird observation stations arranged by habitat and species on your own such as:

The magnificent city of Cartagena, once a preferred target for pirates and the treasure chest of the Spanish Main, is yours to explore as you embark an air-conditioned bus or mini-bus today. On tour, you will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide as you travel past marvelous Republican architecture. You will see the Manga residential area, where some of the aging mansions have been restored to their original splendor. Stop for a half hour to explore the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas, a 17th century construction acknowledged to be the most important work of Spanish Military engineering in Latin America. At Las Bovedas (the Dungeons), about 20 minutes is allowed for handicraft shopping and for rubbing elbows with the local artisans who proudly display their works for you. Pass through Simón Bolívar Square and the Inquisition Palace before continuing on to the Cathedral, also called The Minor Basilica, it was the first church built in the city in 1537. Next stop is the Church of San Pedro Claver—the patron saint of slaves. You will find Colombia’s famous native gem—the emerald—along with handicrafts and leather goods shops. You will have approximately 40 minutes to shop before returning to the ship.

Depart from the port of Cartagena for the short drive to the famous Getsemaní district. This neighborhood represents a different side a Cartagena.  You will have time to explore this area which embodies the greatest cultural heritage of the city. From the colonial architecture and history, to the brightness of its streets and the colorful personality of its people, this populous sector of the city is a magical place that every visitor will appreciate. After your guided walk through the narrow streets of Getsemaní, you will arrive at a point to observe the Convent La Popa located at the highest point of Cartagena, San Felipe Fort, and San Sebastian del Pastelillo Port, where the tour guide will give all the historical information on these three highly relevant city monuments. Your tour will bring you to the barracks of Bóvedas, former jail cells now converted to colorful handicraft stores and galleries.  This construction consists of 47 arches and 23 vaults, considered the last work of the period of the Colony. You will have time to browse and shop. Your tour will continue as you follow the wall and make a walk through the main streets and squares of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will board your motor coach for the 15-minute drive to San Felipe Fortress, the largest Spanish fort built in the 17th century.  You will have time to take photos before taking a sightseeing drive through the Old City, admiring the marvelous Republican architecture of the houses in the Manga residential area. You will be taken to the Emerald Museum – Bocagrande to learn about emeralds.You will go into an actual size replica of a mine tunnel and experience what mining is like as you watch the emerald-bearing veins. Then you will be taken to a special room for a lecture and a video on emeralds. You will learn how emeralds are extracted from the mines and brought to the different cutting and polishing centers. You will see the cutting and polishing machines and be shown step by step how each stone is cut and polished and you will have the opportunity to practice cutting a stone if you wish. Visit the jewelry making workshop and watch the process of fabricating sterling silver or 18k gold emerald jewelry before you visit the spacious and comfortable showroom. Then, enjoy a cocktail and have the opportunity to shop with an extra discount for you, before returning to the ship. On your way back to the ship you will have a sightseeing tour of modern Cartagena - Bocagrande, Laguito, Castillo Grande and the bay.

In the midst of the 55,000-acre Soberania National Park, the Aerial Tram allows you to discover the secrets of the upper forest canopy deep within nature.  Board your motor coach for the 45-minute ride to the park.  The Tram will take you from the shadowy forest floor through the understory and into the sun-drenched canopy. Take in a birds-eye-view of a thousand hues of green, interspersed with the fluorescent exclamation points of flowering trees. You’ll even be able to see the Panama Canal from the Observation Platform.  Stop at the frog exhibit and proceed to the butterfly & orchid exhibitions to see and hear creatures in a natural setting.

Considered the 8th wonder of the world, the Panama Canal consists of a series of locks. The focus of this tour is designed to showcase the Miraflores Locks on the Pacific and to get an up close look at recent expansion. After boarding your motor coach for the 45-minute drive, you’ll make your way to the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center. In here take the opportunity to pause and view the gargantuan ships that make their way through the Panama Canal Museum and visit the terrace that overlooks the Panama Canal and has an exhibition area that constitutes the heart of this center. Next, you will head to the nearby IMAX Theater to enjoy an informational rich canal documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman. A small popcorn is included. After observing this amazing feat, you’ll travel to the New Panama Canal Locks (Agua Clara Visitor Center) where you’ll see the addition of a new traffic lane. This new lane created two new sets of locks, one on the Pacific and one on the Atlantic, which doubles the canal’s capacity and allows longer and wider vessels to transit.  Also included, lunch at a local restaurant, located in Panama City where you can taste the local flavors. At the end of your tour, you’ll return to port.

You will start the tour with a 30-minute drive to Miraflores to see the huge vessels passing through the Panama Canal. You will be able to see many ships getting lifted or lowered as you enjoy the view from a sheltered terrace and listen to the explanations of your guide. You will also learn about the history of the canal and its significance for Panama and the entire world trade as well as on the current expansion project. You will continue with your guide to the Amador Causeway, a road that connects three Islands in the Pacific Ocean and offers magnificent views of the Canal on one side and of the skyline of Panama City on the other side. The tour will continue to Casco Viejo, Panama City’s colonial quarter. At Casco Viejo you will take a trip back in time as you admire the lovely colonial houses, the narrow roads and the impressive churches. You will get a good idea about Panama’s history by driving or walking through the main attractions of this quarter.

You will have a 45-minute drive to the speed boat. After an exhilarating 30-minute ride at high speed right through the heart of the Panama Canal, the boat will slow down and enter the labyrinth of jungle-covered islands of Lake Gatun. In this protected area the wildlife is plentiful, and you are likely to encounter capuchin monkeys, 3-toed sloths, howler monkeys, various kinds of toucans and other bird life as well as caimans, crocodiles, turtles and a wealth of butterflies. This is an exceptional place to experience the sights and sounds of the jungle up close.  The trained naturalist guides will ensure that you have an outstanding nature experience by identifying the wildlife as well as educating you about the area on this exceptional jungle and canal adventure.

Step aboard a time machine and travel back more than 600 years; to a Central America only few have had the privilege of experiencing. This will be a journey into the lives of the Embera Indigenous Tribe, a proud people, who have been able to maintain their traditions and lifestyle as it was before the Spaniards colonized the region. Start out the expedition aboard an air-conditioned vehicle where a knowledgeable guide will give you an overview of Panama on the way to the jungles of the Central Region. Your host will prepare you for the cultural feast you are about to experience by sharing the history and customs of the Emberá People who are the keepers of the Rainforest and Chagres River. When you arrive at the Chagres National Park, you will board dugout canoes that will take you to the Emberá Village. These dugouts are sturdy and worthy craft critical in the conquering of the jungle and in establishing supply lifelines for both the Emberá and Spanish. After motoring up river, you will see the village emerge from the jungle. Keep your eyes open along the way, as the region offers abundant wildlife particularly active along the river’s edge. In the Village, the Chief will welcome you with traditional Emberá hospitality. A series of dances have been arranged to add to this cultural exchange. Feel free to wander the village, ask questions or interact with these quiet people. Please remember that we are guests in their home and a good measure of common sense and sensitivity towards their privacy is appreciated. The Emberá men and woman are spectacular craftsmen who have produced some beautiful items, which will be available for purchase as souvenirs or keepsakes of this unique experience.

The inshore fishing in Central America is often overlooked due to the phenomenal offshore fishing that grabs headlines, but it is equally as exciting and even more diverse. You can catch over 20 different species of game fish while inshore fishing. For the anglers who aren’t interested in trolling offshore all day you can cast poppers, slow-troll live bait, or go jigging as the inshore action is consistent and exciting. Along the Pacific coastlines of the Isla Parida archipelago you can fish the volcanic coastline and countless islands for Jacks, Mackerel, big Cubera Snapper, Snook, and the famous Roosterfish. The unique dorsal fin and hard fighting ability of the Roosterfish make it one of the most sought after species for many salt water anglers!

Please note:  This is a catch-and-release fishing activity. Caught fish are not allowed to be brought back on board. Wear light clothing and comfortable shoes. Bring your swimsuit, towel, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, and insect repellent. Your boat will be guided by an experienced captain and mate. You will be provided with top-of-the line tackle and gear, bait sodas, bottled water, beer, all required safety equipment including life jackets, throw devise, fire extinguishers, smoke and flare devices, ship-to-shore radio and first aid kit.

The rainforest is filled with over 1,000 teak, mahogany, eucalyptus, and many of other trees, plants and fauna. Your hike will approximately and 1 ½ hours in significant to extreme heat and humidity and the level of difficulty is moderate to strenuous.  You will disembark your ship and take tenders to the beach where you will be met by certified bilingual guides. Isla Parida represents one of the world’s few remaining “undiscovered” places. Adventure off the beaten path to explore the wondrous ecology of the island, from beautiful flowers and rare vegetation to iguanas and rare birds. Along the way you’ll enjoy a viewpoint stop to see neighboring islands. 

Experience the interesting cacao manufacturing process by visiting a traditional cacao plantation at Kobo Farm. Board your minivan for the 25-minute drive to this untouched and mystical area, where you will see the cacao forest, the flowers, and fruit. The history and culture of this tropical crop reaches back to the Mayas. You will learn about the origin of the cacao tree, the history, the first contact with Europeans, and the principal disease called monilia. You will take a guided walk where you will see different species of cacao fruit, take a break in this beautiful spot and taste fresh fruit from the “chocolate tree.”  You will be shown the various steps of making good chocolate and have the opportunity to taste a wonderful chocolate fondue with fresh fruit and homemade banana bread from the farm in the middle of a tropical garden.

Please note:  Wear comfortable walking shoes as you will be walking over both paved and dirt paths. It also involves a wet landing so bring your sandals or water shoes as well.  Bring  your  hat,  sunscreen, insect  repellent and sunglasses. The guide will be waiting for you at the chocolate farm.  

Costa Rica’s warm seas are home to one of the most biologically diverse marine habitats in the world. The best place to observe these magnificent mammals is in the waters off the Osa Peninsula. You will board your boat and head for a place known by ¨National Geographic to be “the most biologically intense area on earth.” A place where large groups of dolphins swim in clear blue tropical waters putting on an amazing show!  As you cruise around the bay your tour will be enhanced by the informative commentary provided by a trained naturalist guide. You will learn about the biology, behavior and habits of the wildlife you will spot. You will have amazing photo opportunities and if weather permits you will have free time to swim in the serene waters of Punta Encanto (Enchanted Beach).  

Please note: This tour is not recommended for those with limited mobility or back problems as it involves an optional nature walk over a gravel surface and the boat ride might get bumpy.

Go across Golfo Dulce where life goes at a slow pace and through the humid mangroves with the squeaking sounds of the unique scarlet macaws that mingle in this area, the most common birds. Your kayak guides will be waiting with your kayaks and paddles ready for you to begin this fun experience! Paddle up the mangrove estuary with the rising tide until you can go no further and return with the falling tide, dragging your kayak across the sand spit and into the Golfo Dulce to cruise the shoreline, stopping to swim at the best beach.  Pods of bottle-nosed porpoises return daily along this coast on their way to the open Pacific, affording a great chance to view them.

A boat ride through the mangroves is like visiting another world.  The species of trees that grow in the mixed waters of the ocean and the river make a unique and very fragile ecosystem.  Most of these trees grow along the estuary, developing an aerial root system. As the tide goes down the roots become suspended in the air creating a perfect home for crabs and caimans. In the upper part of the forest you will see monkeys and a great variety of birds including herons, egrets, and spoonbills. The launch will take you to a private property for refreshments as your naturalist tour guide gives you more information about this amazing ecosystem. Your shaded boat will then take you deep into the mangroves, where you will try to spot all the incredible wildlife making their home there.  After a 2- hour boat ride you will arrive at the village where transportation will be waiting to drive you back to the ship.  An optional drop off in Quepos is also available, where you will find several restaurants and shops.

Experience a fun and informative tour of local cuisine, learn where the organic ingredients come from, how dishes are prepared, and how to recreate recipes at home. Once in the small town of Londres, at a private ranch and dining area, you will be greeted by the team. They will proceed to guide you through the garden to pick out some finishing flavors, colors and textures for your meal. Now, to the preparation guided by their expert local cooks. Participate in the kitchen and experience the process of making corn tortillas by hand, exotic “ceviches” with plantain, rice cooked the old-fashioned way, chicken in a hearty tomato sauce, “picadillos” and more. Once you sit down for your meal, not only will your appetite be satiated but also your curiosity for Costa Rican local flavors. Let your imagination soar on how to recreate at home with your own seasonal ingredients. There will be leisure time available for you to explore the ranch.

Travel through the beautiful countryside to Esquipulas Rainforest, a lovely private nature reserve located 50 minutes away from Quepos. The property is refreshed with crystal-water creeks, and surrounded by giant trees that you can only find in tropical jungles, a land with an amazing number of species of birds and butterflies. Your naturalist guide will lead you through the trails of the rainforest, sharing the guide’s vast knowledge of this fragile ecosystem. Enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful place, while you walk on easy trails. Search with your binoculars and discover between branches and leaves the secrets of the wildlife in this amazing forest. Be ready with your senses to hear the songs of the different species of birds and even see them! Be on the lookout for toucans, hummingbirds, and animals like monkeys and other small mammals. After this unforgettable encounter with nature, learn more about Costa Rica followed by an introduction to one of the most important crops in the local economy the coffee.   In their private museum, your tour guide will show you the process to convert this fruit in one of the most famous drinks around the world. To get the best of your day in Quepos you will then be served a hearty traditional Costa Rican casado lunch.

This is an excursion for adrenaline lovers. You will be picked up at La Marina and go to the property where you will start your horseback riding tour. During the 30-minute drive to Londres - where the tour starts - your guide will give you an interesting briefing about the history of Quepos. Once you reach Londres you will set foot on a picturesque property that has bathrooms, stables, a corral and an open air waiting area. You will receive riding instructions, safety tips and practice time, before heading out to explore the rainforest. This tour will allow you to uncover the exotic secrets that lie within this secondary rainforest. The maximum altitude of this area is 1,900 feet. You will ride through the mountains without reaching the mountain top. Your horse ride lasts about 2.5 hours (round trip) and it will be highlighted by amazing valley views, verdant vegetation and numerous wildlife species such as birds and reptiles. At the end of the trail there is a beautiful waterfall where you will be able to rest for about 30 minutes. You can lie on the grass or take a swim or both! After the break, you will return by the same trail. Back to the stables; enjoy a refreshing beer and Costa Rican-style BBQ, just as a real cowboy would do! 

Please note:  This tour is not suitable for guests without any horseback riding experience or who may not be comfortable around horses. Children riding alone must be at least 6 years old. Experience a unique piece of Costa Rican rural heritage just about an hour from Quepos on a scenic country drive by van. This guided nature, conservation, and cultural expedition takes you along the lush, jungle-shrouded slopes of the nearby Fila Chonta Mountains to the farm village of Santa Juana. You will enjoy exploring along the 1.5-mile user-friendly nature trail as your guide will share knowledge of this pristine sanctuary of flora and fauna where both the Rodeo and Paquita Rivers are born. You will continue to where you can swim beneath the pristine waterfalls that feed the Rodeo River.  You will have free time to fish for tilapia or explore the tropical gardens and waterfalls. You will visit the tiny farm village of Santa Juana, overlooking the panoramic coastline of the Pacific Ocean as you enjoy an authentic Campesino (country) lunch in a typical village rancho, co-hosted by members of the local community.   

Please note: This tour is not wheelchair accessible. The road is bumpy and winding and there are stairs involved. This tour includes a light breakfast and a buffet lunch.  There is an option for swimming so wear your bathing suit under your clothes. 

 

 

 

The Gulf of Papagayo is located in the northwestern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica and is known for its beautiful beaches, its amazing year-round good weather, the abundant wildlife that lives in its waters and the wide variety of activities that visitors can be a part of while visiting this beautiful country. During this tour, you will sail aboard a beautiful catamaran through the waters of the Gulf of Papagayo, and discover its enchanting marine world: beautiful reefs, colorful and pristine beaches, dolphins, flying fish and other marine species that are only part of the spectacle you might witness during this adventure. You can even relax on the boat and sip delicious refreshing tropical drinks and snacks that are served by the crew as you simply enjoy and delight yourself with the amazing views of the ocean, the surrounding beaches and feel the marine breeze on your face.  On arrival at Playa Heuvos there will be time to swim, snorkel or explore in the tranquil warm ocean.

Please note:  The catamaran is not wheelchair accessible. Bring your bathing suit and a towel and your own snorkel equipment if you wish. 

You’ll have a 30-minute drive to the Congo Trail Private Reserve where your adventure will begin. A platform located at ground level will mark the beginning of your experience. Industry-approved, ultra-safe harness equipment and a network of steel cables that connect eight trees in the forest will be your road to excitement while you learn the secrets of the dry forest. Gliding from tree to tree, you will have a birds-eye-view of the forest. The fauna is especially abundant here. Hundreds of different species of birds have been sighted, along with the howler monkey, many different snakes, coatis, and other mammals. At the end of the last cable, you will head back to earth and your ride back to your ship.

This eco-adventure will explore the rainforest canopy with a flight across 7 ziplines, 3 aerial bridges and down a rappel element. A 4x4 Unimog will transport you to the mountaintop outfitting shelter where you will be fitted with safety equipment and taught the basics of ziplining. From 135 feet above the forest floor, you'll traverse zip lines ranging from 175 feet to the 850-foot pulse-pounding "Ben's Revenge." Treetop platforms and 3 hanging sky bridges will offer breathtaking views of the forest and frequent wildlife sightings, especially wild black bears.  After completing the zipline course, end your adventure by rappelling to the ground. Time permitting you will be invited to tour the historic Fleenor Sawmill, explore a garden of completed totem poles and visiting the Alaska Raptor Center's Ketchikan Exhibit to see their amazing birds of prey up close.

Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by a guardian.  Pregnant women and guests with medical conditions should consult with their doctor prior to participating.  All guests will be required to complete a medical waiver form. Closed-toe shoes are required; long pants recommended. Zipline equipment (helmet, gloves, seat harness, chest harness), rain jacket, and storage for your personal items will be provided. Cooking your Catch allows you to indulge in the unparalleled flavor of freshly caught Alaskan seafood featuring fish and shellfish that you will catch in the wilderness of the Tongass National Forest. Your fishing and culinary journey will begin at a private marina in downtown Ketchikan, where you’ll be completely outfitted in quality raingear, boots, socks, and hats and board your 30-foot Cabin Cruiser. The fishing part of your day will be spent in the protected waters of the pristine wilderness. You will enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Tongass National Forest where whales, bald eagles and numerous Alaskan seabirds are often seen. An experienced Alaskan fishing guide will take you to his favorite fishing destinations. You’ll have the opportunity to reel in Pacific halibut, rockfish, lingcod, Pacific cod, and salmon if during the salmon runs. The fishing goal for the day will be to catch as many different species as possible to make your meal interesting and enjoyable. You will have a light lunch featuring smoked salmon. After a few hours of fishing, you will cruise back to the private marina where you can take a classic Alaskan picture next to your day's catch. You will meet the Baranof fish monger and the Alaska Fish House Chef as you identify the different species and their importance to Ketchikan, decide which fish you’ll dine on and discuss your chef's cooking recommendations. At the Alaska Fish House, you will have an intimate, chef-hosted dinner featuring your catch of the day. This is a uniquely hands-on dinner featuring flavors and ingredients from the day’s fishing exploration. There’s no fresher seafood than the fish you catch yourself.   

Please note: Guests must bring currency ($25 per person for fishing license and $15 per person for optional King Salmon stamp) and are encouraged to carry credit cards to purchase extras, such as souvenirs or snacks. For safety reasons, this excursion is not available to expectant mothers, guests with back or neck injuries or those who have undergone recent surgeries. The weather can change rapidly, forcing the vessel to navigate through some sea swell. Wheelchairs need to be standard size and collapsible; no electric wheelchairs/scooters will be permitted. Guests must be able to board and disembark the motor coach and vessel on their own. Each Guest fishes with a provided Penn rod and reel. Guests do the fishing, not the guides. Dress warmly in layers. Sunscreen is also recommended for sunny days. You should never feel that gratuities are expected, but it is customary to leave a tip in recognition of exceptional service in restaurants, taxis and for excursion guides and drivers. It is always up to you to determine the amount.

The world’s best lumberjacks go head to head in more than a dozen exciting events such as chopping, sawing, relay races, axe throwing, log rolling and of course the 50-foot speed climb. Your colorful host will not only introduce the events, but will also offer a historic view of the Alaskan timber industry which has shaped this rugged land. Located a short walk from your cruise ship pier, this celebration of a bygone era is a rip roaring good time and quality entertainment for all ages. A must-do in Ketchikan! Covered, heated and cushioned grandstands make this a great choice on rainy days. Videotaping is not permitted but guests can participate in our annual photo contest.

This show operates rain or shine in heated and covered grandstands.  The show site is just a short walk from your ship and is suitable for guests using a wheelchair or scooter.  Video recording is not permitted but still photos are encouraged!

Gain a unique understanding of Ketchikan and its Tlingit culture on this guided walking tour of Alaska’s “First City.” Your guide will be of Tlingit descent and will share personal knowledge of the many changes Ketchikan has experienced over the years. The significance of totem poles within Native culture will be explained as you encounter them on your journey.  You will walk up infamous Creek Street, the former red light district, and learn of its important economic roll in Ketchikan’s early history.  See the historic “Married Man’s Trail” and hear how it received its name. Discover the amazing journey salmon must endure as they head to their spawning ground when you visit a salmon ladder. Trees, shrubbery and flowers are plentiful along the route and your guide will share their importance to the Tlingit’s food gathering practices. Your guide will return you to the downtown shopping area near the cruise ship pier after this easy walk of approximately nine blocks. Questions are encouraged, as your hosts want you to leave Ketchikan with a better understanding of the community and its Native culture.

Discover Ketchikan’s breathtaking natural sights and tasty flavors at the historic George Inlet Lodge. Begin your tour with a scenic drive to the lodge and encounter canneries, an old sawmill, and decorative totem poles along the way.  Upon your arrival, board a fully enclosed, heated vessel for a narrated 7-mile cruise through George Inlet and the Tongass National Forest. You will see snow-capped mountains and waterfalls, and learn about the area’s crabbing history. You will even pull crab pots and check out the catch. Next, relax at the charming George Inlet Lodge, a historic cannery building converted into this elegant ocean-side lodge. Your Alaskan Native guide will share the diverse history of Wrangell starting with the first inhabitants, the Tlingit Nation, whose history spans approximately 10,000 years. Sit down as invited guests at Chief Shakes Tribal House to hear stories that have been with us; passed down generation to generation. Learn the story of Fort Wrangell, unearth ancient petroglyphs and explore Wrangell today (from the comfort of your shuttle). Bottled water and a souvenir petroglyph rubbing will be available for you. Three great sites will be visited: Chief Shakes Tribal House, the Wrangell Museum and Petroglyph Beach. Several historic sites are viewed from the shuttle as part of the driving portion of this tour. The tour will depart from and return to your pier. As the third oldest city in Alaska, ruled by four nations, under three flags, Wrangell’s rich and diverse history is sure to captivate you!  

Please note: This is a walking and driving tour.  Much time will be spent on your feet at Petroglyph Beach and the Wrangell Museum. Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate attire. You will be transported by shuttle bus to each of the sites. All sites are handicap accessible, although not able to accommodate wheelchairs. 

Discover the highlights of this truly Alaskan town and see its colorful history and native culture come to life while visiting the Wrangell Museum and Petroglyph Beach with Kiks Adi Totem Park view and Alaskan Native interpretation.  Departing the pier, meander to downtown Wrangell to view Kiks Adi Totem Park. Then, learn about fishing and the Stikine River and its significant influence on the development of Wrangell.  Pass through the town and see its historic churches, while on the way, catch a glimpse of a traditional Tlingit Tribal House and Wrangell's oldest harbor. Visit Wrangell's famous anthropological sight, Petroglyph Beach and see ancient rock carvings dating from 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, before the settlement by the Tlingit tribes. Enjoy a petroglyph rubbing demonstration before heading to the Wrangell Museum. The local museum houses a rich assortment of over 5,000 historic photos, native artifacts, a collection of Tlingit petroglyphs, and fishing, mining and logging displays.
 
Please note: The order of sites may vary. Walking is required to and from the sites, especially Petroglyph Beach, a natural beach with rocks, gravel, sand and logs that can be slippery at low tide. There are several steps to Petroglyph Beach, not suitable for those in wheelchairs.  Walkers or canes can do this tour, but you may choose also to stay on the bus where the walking is too much. You may wish to enjoy additional city highlights on their own before returning to the ship. 

 

 

The Stikine River is considered one of the last truly wild rivers in North America, running directly through the nearly ½ million acre Stikine LeConte’ Wilderness area. Immerse yourself in the pristine wilderness of the world's largest temperate rainforest that is home to a variety of wildlife species and though elusive, you may have a chance of sighting. Add the excitement of an exhilarating jet-boat ride, gold rush history, world renowned scenery, and the most experienced energetic captains, and you have a great excursion. On the pier, you will meet captain and interpretive guide and embark  on the custom-built, heated and covered, jet boat to begin your adventure. Traverse the ever changing river delta, meander through side sloughs and explore the banks of the river. Seek out views of distant mountain peaks, spy on spawning salmon and listen to thundering waterfalls. Your journey will culminate at Shakes Lake with its sparkling blue, crystal clear icebergs. If accessible, you will venture in farther for a view of Shakes Glacier and the ancient ice from which it was created. If conditions allow, come ashore at a wilderness location on the banks of the Stikine and experience the wilderness up close.

Please note: The tour routing and sights may change due to weather, nature and water conditions. Due to the nature of boating in the wilderness on the Stikine River, which sometimes requires travel in shallow water, you may experience quick or sudden stops, starts and turns while underway. Guests should be in good physical health with a full range of motion to get into/out of the vessel and have no motion-related ailments or any other health issues. This tour is not wheelchair or handicapped accessible. This tour departs and returns from the Wrangell city dock, which is a short walking distance (300 ft) from the ship.  At certain tidal conditions the access ramp to the vessels can be very steep.  Facilities are basic in the wilderness location and consist primarily of USFS outhouses.  Although wildlife is seen on many outings, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

John Muir hiked here while using Wrangell as headquarters for his Stikine delta explorations. Participants are assured of wonderful views and a true immersive forest experience with an elevation gain of about 400 feet. This hike will present good views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes and a chance to learn about rainforest ecology. This intimate interpretive tour will be led by two of our experienced onboard Expedition Staff.

Please note: This excursion will depart directly from the ship and will be led by two Expedition Staff. No equipment is required. Guests will need to wear their own suitable footwear and dress according to the prevailing weather conditions. Expedition Voyage Consultants may include geologists, marine biologists, botanists, and glaciologists. The departure time for this tour is subject to change due to the nature of the excursion. Destination Services will notify you about your tour departure time. The walk is mostly on boardwalk which does not have handrails, can become slippery when wet and has approximately 300 steps to the summit of Mount Dewey. This tour is not recommended for those with walking or mobility issues.

Explore ~Stretch ~ Twist ~ and pull your very own colorful Venetian glass cane, ~ one of the oldest methods of working in glass!  After your hands-on experience in the glass studio, you will explore a beautiful part of the Sitka Community that most do not get to see – local art and traditions. Local glass artist Michelle Barker will welcome you into her studio.  Although she works in many methods of glass, she has a love for the unique history and techniques developed centuries ago in Italy.  On this tour you will watch as these beautiful glass canes are made, and have the opportunity to gently stretch, twist, and pull your own vibrant cane. Sitka has a long history of cultivating the fine arts.  In the early 1800’s Sitka was home to the first opera house, first performing arts theater, and had the first piano on the west coast. With many famous artists such as E.W. Merrill – a well-known glass plate photographer who lived in Sitka from 1819 through the 1840’s – to present day artists, your guide will explore all Sitka has to offer for art enthusiasts. Walk the city, the galleries, and see local artwork such as silver and wood carving, ceramics, regalia beading, kiln formed glass, ceramics, and pulling Venetian glass canes … maybe even try your hand at one. This tour will include a number of galleries and a hands-on art demonstration. You will meet several local artists and have the opportunity to visit with each of them, receive a wealth of information on the many different forms traditional and local artwork.  Learn why this unique city in Southeast Alaska has grown into the beautiful artist community that it is today. You will have opportunity to purchase locally made and custom made art pieces on this tour as well as make something beautiful of your own!

This unique Alaska excursion explores the historical highlights of this former "Russian" capital city and includes a wildlife tour through the Alaska Raptor Center. The Bald Eagle Center operates with bird care professionals assisted by volunteers to rescue birds, provide them with rehabilitative care and hopefully release them back into the wild. After your introduction to the center, a presentation with one of the Center's educational birds will take place. Time will be available to view the flight center, clinic window, outside deck habitat areas and gift shop. Next, you'll visit the Sitka National Historical Park, where the 1804 "Battle of Alaska," was fought. The park hosts totem-lined trails, cultural exhibits and carving rooms where native Alaskan artisans demonstrate their totemic art form. Walk the nature trail, view cultural exhibits and video presentations, or talk with local native artists about their cultural art form. The final stop will be visiting the Fortress of the Bears, which will allow you to get within 25 feet of Alaska’s brown and black bears in a naturalized setting. You will enjoy observing the bears from a covered viewing platform and interact with an experienced naturalist.

Discover Alaska's abundant natural beauty and wildlife during this award-winning cruise through Sitka Sound, one of the world's most beautiful coastal environments. Search for local marine life on this half-day, scenic excursion. Depart the pier in your waterjet-driven tour vessel which has been specially designed to navigate Southeast Alaska's narrow island passages and bays, permitting spectacular wildlife viewing at close range. The vessel features a warm and comfortable cabin with indoor seating, large windows, a snack bar and restrooms. Or you may opt to visit the upper observation deck for unparalleled photo opportunities, and to experience the surroundings. Discover why Sitka is one of Southeast Alaska’s best places for salmon fishing during this memorable fishing experience. Upon your arrival, you will take a short walk to board your fishing boat and proceed to Sitka Sound and its adjacent waters to fish for king, silver, chum, and pink salmon, depending on the month. Salmon fishing is performed via “trolling,” or “mooching.” When trolling two or four lines are fishing off downriggers while the boat is underway and hooked fish are played on a rotational basis. When mooching you will hold a rod and work the bait while the boat is anchored. Your captain will decide which method he feels is the most effective given the conditions of the day. Your fishing boat will be a cabin cruiser style sport fishing boat that averages 24-30 feet in length and 4-6 guests will be assigned to each boat. After approximately 3 hours of fishing, your boat will return back to the pier. If you wish, meet with local fish processors to have your catch sent to your home (within the continental U.S.A.).

Your captain has the local knowledge and experience to deliver the best possible viewing experience on any given day throughout the season. At Fin Island Lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to indulge in a delicious Alaska feast! Alaskan crab, wild salmon, prime rib, homemade side dishes, and dessert are all-inclusive with the tour. Treat yourself to an exclusive rafting and scenic drive through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Begin with a riverside drive along the Haines Highway. The drive is incredibly scenic: glacier-clad mountains thrust to the sky, colorful wildflowers line the road, green riverside channels provide habitat for moose, bear and trumpeter swans. The highway was declared a National Scenic Byway in 2009. Arrive at the river in the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, approximately 40 minutes away. Board your raft and enjoy a scenic float down the Chilkat River through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. You will be immersed in the Alaskan wilderness, floating the silent river. Paddling is not required, as your expert guide will push the raft along, leaving your hands free for your binoculars or camera. Along the way, your guide will interpret the natural history of the area, and share some exciting stories from life in the Alaskan wilderness. You will learn to spot bald eagles and gain an appreciation for the challenges that bald eagles face to survive. Early in the summer, resident eagles are often seen coming and going from their nest to feed their young. As the summer continues and the river fills with salmon, more and more eagles arrive to feed.

Meet your naturalist guide for a small-group driving tour (14 guests maximum) to scenic and wildlife-rich Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. Depending on the season, bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears can be seen here. As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Bald eagles nest here and are commonly seen perched in the trees above the river and soaring overhead. Beginning in August, brown bears amble down to the riverbanks to feed on salmon. Supplied with extra binoculars and a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, your guide explains how the animals fit into the Chilkoot's complex ecosystem. May, June, and July feature an explosion of wildflowers with bald eagles nesting along the lush river. Beginning in August, pink salmon—the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties—begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. Make sure to bring your camera to take advantage of the numerous photo opportunities.

This wildlife sanctuary sprawls over 60 acres and will provide you an opportunity for some great photos of orphaned Alaskan animals in a natural setting. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see wild animals as they live out the rest of their lives in their natural habitat.  Steve is their caregiver and talks to the animals like a real Alaskan Dr. Doolittle. Steve was born and raised on a farm in Northern Minnesota and worked with wild, orphaned animals since he was a toddler. From grade school on, he did animal presentations for the public and later, on national television. As an adult, Steve started working with wild animals in the motion picture industry and his first filmwork was with wolves on Walt Disney's Never Cry Wolf in 1981.  Later he started making his own wildlife movies and works on documentaries for National Geographic, and many others which continue to this day.

Haines is known for its wildlife and stunning natural surroundings. This small-group tour is for every type of photographer - from those who have a professional-level camera to those who primarily use their Smart Phone. Either way, you'll learn how to take better photos. Your professional photographer guide will select the best locations to find the most dramatic light and wildlife activity. Composition tips, camera settings and how to take advantage of available light are discussed, along with how to predict wildlife behavior. Bald eagles are commonly seen and, depending on the time of year, brown bears can sometimes be found feeding on salmon along the Chilkoot River. This tour will go through prime wildlife habitat, however, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The small-group nature of the tour will allow the guide to spend time with each participant, ensuring you will come away with ideas and goals for your future photography.
 
Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking; however, guests must be able to embark/disembark the vehicles via steps. It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Dress in layers, wear comfortable walking shoes, bring rain gear and your camera equipment. Observing bear and other wildlife is the goal but cannot be guaranteed.
 
 

 

 

 

The White Pass Railroad offers a unique 40-mile vintage train ride that climbs from Skagway to the summit of White Pass with an elevation of 2,865 feet. You will begin your journey with a 30-45 minute boat ride via fast ferry from Haines to Skagway.  Once in Skagway you’ll begin your experience onboard one of the yellow 1927 sightseeing buses belonging to the “oldest sightseeing company in Alaska.” Founded in 1923 by former Klondike stampeder, Martin Itjen, your costumed conductor passes on a century of Skagway history, behind the scenes tales, and stories of life in small town Alaska. You’ll explore the waterfront, National Park Historic District and Skagway’s residential area, famous for its flower gardens. Arriving at the railway depot, you’ll board a vintage railcar for your trip aboard the world famous White Pass & Yukon Railroad, retracing the original route of the Klondike Stampeders while enjoying a breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls. This narrow-gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. It shares this honor with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty, and is truly a world wonder. Upon arrival at Fraser, B.C., you’ll travel back to Skagway via the Klondike Highway by mini-bus. There will be plenty of photo stops along the way. 

 

Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your original passport, camera, and binoculars. Duration of the entire tour is approximately 8 hours; this includes the transfer time on the fast ferry, which is approximately 45 minutes each way and allows free time in Skagway.  The tour might run in reverse order. 

 

 

 

Enjoy the peace and quiet of the true Alaskan Wilderness as you travel about 25 miles of the Chilkat River System, exploring the different channels that this unique, braided river system offers.  Watch for wildlife as they are frequently sighted during the river tour.  The flat bottom river boats are designed specifically to traverse the narrow and sometimes shallow, channels, which is the only way to explore this road-less portion of the Bald Eagle Preserve.  This tour is well known for moose and bear sightings, although not a guarantee, wildlife sightings are quite frequent.  The tour will take off from private property, so all the amenities are available for you to feel comfortable and right at home while the friendly staff will prepare your meal.  Sit around the crackling fire and enjoy the clean fresh air and beauty that surrounds you.  You will come away with a greater appreciation of the wilderness and the people who call this "last frontier" their home.  Your tour will begin at the pier where your ship is docked, with a 30-minute bus ride into the heart of the Bald Eagle Preserve on the Haines Scenic Byway.  Where the road ends, your adventure begins.
