Like a Local
Windstar doesn’t just take you to interesting places. It takes you into local indigenous communities to learn first-hand about their cultures, and to refuges, sanctuaries and national parks where you can spot local monkeys, crocodiles and toucans in their native habitats.
Mayan Ruins Beyond Ordinary
The Mayans were one of the most advanced cultures of the ancient Americas, and on a Windstar cruise you can explore their legacy. Discover the ancient city of Tulum from Cozumel, with its ornate temples, step pyramids and famous lighthouse. In Belize, enjoy a private tour through Mayan ceremonial chambers in the Crystal Caves, or see the temples at Lamanai. Climb to a site where humans were once sacrificed in Chacchoben near Costa Maya. See the remarkable stone carvings of Quirigua or the ruins of Tikal near Santo Tomas de Castillo.
More Time, More Exploration – Smaller Ports, Indigenous People
When you travel off the beaten path like Windstar does, you enjoy a more authentic experience of each destination. That goes for everything from cultures and cuisines to architecture and handicrafts. By visiting smaller ports like Bocas del Toro, we put you within easy reach of indigenous communities. And our carefully curated excursions let you listen to conversations in ancient Mayan, taste Garifuna crispy yucca bread, and shop for traditional handicrafts like hand-woven Ngobe-Buglé handbags.
Featured Port: Costa Maya
Costa Maya is the closest gateway to the Chaccoben Mayan Ruins some of which you can climb to get an amazing view. The port features interesting shopping, local artisans and good restaurant and bars. It is part of the massive Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, home to sharks, dolphins and turtles and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve where jaguars, monkeys and hundreds of bird species live.
Featured Shore Excursion: Archaeological Tulum (Cozumel, Mexico)
Visit Tulúm, a pre-Colombian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico
