Lisbon to Barcelona
Discover unforgettable destinations overlooked by larger cruise lines during this 10-day Western Mediterranean cruise that visits historic landmarks and little-known spaces in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. Wander warm sandy beaches near Portimao or board a small boat bound for caves and bronze- and umber-hued rock formations at the Alfanzina Grotto. Sip fino and oloroso sherries in a quiet cellar outside of Cádiz. Barter for handmade jewelry and handpainted ceramics in a crowded souk. Browse Pablo Picasso’s sculptures and obscure works and savor a Spanish sunset and evening tapas—best paired with spicy Grenacha and dark Tempranillo wines—during an overnight stay in Málaga. Unearth the ancient influences of Hispania Antiqua as you explore the Roman Theatre and Museum prior to observing the excavations and 2,000-year-old Punic relics at the Muralla Punica archaeological site.

“The ancient streets and plazas are so well preserved and rich in historical treasures that wandering around can feel like you’ve stepped onto a movie set. Almost everything here is centuries old and a window onto a glorious and often tumultuous past.”
The Story
What is it about Andalusia that captivates historians, artists, travelers, and foodies alike? Who were the people who shaped this sun-drenched land? Why do Spain, Portugal, and Morocco continue to elicit such passionate responses from those who visit here? A clue lies in its geography.

Only the narrow Strait of Gibraltar separates Iberia from Morocco, and for nearly 800 years the Moors ruled the land to either side. They left behind sophisticated irrigation systems, pueblos blancos – whitewashed hillside villages – and palaces adorned with horseshoe arches, graceful domes, and vibrant zellige tiles. Influence flowed the other way as well, exporting Spanish traditions like the evening paseo, Mediterranean cuisine, Andalusian music, and even the Spanish language to places like Tangier and Tetouan.

Watch elaborate tilework morph from the green geometric designs of the Moors to Lisbon’s blue-and-white slices of life. Wander the arched passageways of Moorish fortresses in Andalusia, and Art Deco-inspired buildings in Morocco. Compare the saffron-infused flavor of Spanish paella with its spicier Moroccan cousin. Sip sherry in Jerez and mint tea in the souks of Tangier.

Discover where the two cultures meet, where they mingle, where they dance, and where they each go their own way.

Insider Tips:
  • In Morocco, haggling is considered a normal part of shopping. Know what you’re willing to pay before you start, and walk out if you can’t get the price you want.
  • In Portugal it’s standard practice for waiters to bring you little dishes of olives, bread, cheese and cold meats, but they are not free unless they are part of a set menu. If you don’t want them, just politely send them back untouched and you won’t be charged.
  • The best way to taste sherry, especially if it’s dry, is with something to snack on alongside. The sweeter the sherry, the easier it is to drink without food.
  • The Alcazaba Palace was built in the 11th century and is a highlight of any visit to Malaga. With an overnight in the city, you might make an evening visit to the Gibralfaro Viewing Point where you can see the Alcazaba and other key sites beautifully lit.
  • Women should dress conservatively in Morocco to avoid unwanted attention. Keep a shawl or scarf handy, and if visiting mosques, cover down to your wrists and ankles.
