Tangier is a fascinating city to visit and contrary to popular belief the movie Casablanca was based on Tangier, not Casablanca. It is an interesting mix of North African, Spanish and French cultures. Your coach will take you on a 30-minute drive to the entrance of the Kasbah of Tangier. Walk inside the Kasbah and then you will head uphill to an area barely changed since Roman times. Back down the hill you will find yourself in one of Tangier's most colorful and bustling areas, the Grand Souk . It is the link between the medina and the new city. You will stop at the Continental Hotel for a refreshment before boarding your coach for the return trip to your waiting ship. Please note : Wear comfortable walking shoes. Disembark the ship and depart by air-conditioned coach for a drive to St Andrew's Church . The Lord's Prayer is inscribed in Arabic around the chancel arch, which is built on land given to the government of the Queen of Great Britain - Queen Victoria - by the Sultan Moulay Hassan I in 1883. A century earlier Morocco had been the first country in the world to recognize the independence of the United States of America. Your guide will lead you into one of Tangier's most colorful and bustling areas, the Grand Socco (Souk). It is the center of things and the link between the medina and the new city. From here your guide will lead you to the American Legation Museum, which documents the history of the relationship between the United States and Morocco. Among several displays, there is a letter from George Washington to Moulay Abdellah. You will then drive to Tetouan, and upon arrival, enjoy a typical Moroccan lunch in a beautiful Riad in the Old Medina of Tetouan. After lunch you will tour the old Royal Palace, a 17th century building closed to public entry but its main ornate gate Bab Er-Rouah can give you a mental idea of what is beyond. Hassan II Square is situated where the historic and modern parts of the city converge to create the heart of the town. Join a guided walk through the Medina which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have the opportunity to visit the Bab Akla School of Traditional Arts and Crafts. Tetouan's famous School of Plastic Arts, the first of its kind in Morocco, has produced some of Morocco's best painters over the past half century. The city stands out for the beauty of these traditional arts including embroidery, cuisine, zullayj or mosaics, and carved and painted wooden objects. The scholars of the school are all children that come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the skills learned give them a new opportunity for success in their future. Your entrance fees go directly to maintaining this wonderful initiative. Time permitting, you will have some time at leisure for shopping before returning to the ship. Tangier is a fascinating Moroccan city to visit. It has many of the things that travelers love - a sense of exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, unspoiled beaches, and friendly people. It is an interesting mix of North Africa, Spanish, and French cultures. You will have a 2-hour drive via Cap Malabata and Tetouan toward Chefchaouen for some sightseeing. You will start your tour with the inside visit of the Old Kasbah in the medina. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen was built in the early 18th century by the legendary ruler Moulay Ismail. It is fairly simple without architectural surprises however it is surrounded by gardens on the interior and exterior. Inside the Kasbah, you can visit the ethnographic museum containing antique weapons, musical instruments, and photographs of the old town. You will explore the blue-washed town (old medina) by foot along with your guide who will share stories of Chefchaouen's history. You will have a photo stop to take pictures of a panoramic view of the Hispanic flavored town lined with blue and whitewashed houses, tiny balconies, tiled roofs and patios embellished with citrus trees. Visit the cobbled main square, Plaza Uta el- Hammam where you will have some free time for shopping and where the striking 15th century Grand Mosque sits. The Mosque and its nearby buildings were built by Jewish refugees, who alongside Muslims escaped the Spanish persecution to Chefchaouen. You will board the motor coach for the 30-minute drive to Cap Spartel , one of the promontories projecting into the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. From here, you will drive to the town of Asilah , which is situated approximately 1 hour from Tangier on the northwestern tip of Morocco's Atlantic coast. Throughout history, the small coastal city of Asilah has been coveted by both Portugal and Spain. The city is well known for its enormous cultural and artistic contribution to Morocco's history. Every summer, the International Festival of Asilah attracts thousands of people from all over the world. Upon arrival in the town, we stop at Asilah Golf Club for refreshments . The Moors introduced olives, olive juice and citrus while the Jewish-Moors left behind their sophisticated preserving techniques that we see in the frequent use of preserved lemons, pickles, etc. The Ottoman Empire introduced barbecue (kebabs) to Moroccan cuisine. The French colony, although short-lived left behind a culture of cafes, pastries, and even wine. Over time, cooks in the kitchens of the five royal cities (Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes, Tangier and Rabat) have developed and perfected the dishes that blend each of these distinct tastes. Every Moroccan dish has its place in society and varies with the market, the season, and the region. Your first stop will be the Grand Socco , home to a cavalcade of color, charm, street musicians, a fish market, scenic handicrafts, and spices. You will then proceed to Blue Door Hotel Cooking Classroom, where you will be welcomed with Moroccan tea followed by a cooking lesson of a very traditional Moroccan dish, learn how to make the traditional Moroccan bread and take it to a local oven. The Capital of Muslim Spain and the center of the Caliph's power, Cordoba was Europe's largest city as well as a cultural and intellectual sear. Cordoba's hour of greatest glory was when it became the capital of the Moorish kingdom of 'El-Andalus'. You will visit the Great Mosque, or 'Mezquita', which - after several centuries of additions and enlargements became one of the largest in all of Islam. Take a magical walk through the forest of columns, passing beneath its arches and breathing in the history of Arab Cordoba, so brusquely and surprisingly interrupted by the Christian Cathedral set in the center of its vast interior. Continue to the Jewish Quarter and stroll through the quaint, ancient, winding, cobblestone and flower-filled streets. Just a few yards away from the small square Tiberiades - where the monument to the philosopher Maimonides stands - lies one of three surviving pre-inquisition synagogues in Spain. A Mudejar construction dating from 1315, the interior includes a gallery for women looking on to the sanctuary through small balconies, and plasterwork of Hebrew inscriptions. You will have 90 minutes of free time to take the oportunity to taste the local tapas in one of the bars in the area or sightsee before another scenic ride returning to the yacht. Continue to Larios Street , the main shopping avenue of the city, then on to Merced Square , at the end of Calle Alcazabilla, to see the obelisk erected as a tribute to General Torrijos, currently the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. Next you will ride to the Santiago Church , built on the site of a former mosque and Málaga's oldest church (founded in 1490). You'll also visit the Roman Theatre , discovered in 1951, which was built in the time of Caesar Augustus and used until the 3rd century A.D. After that time, it was used as a quarry by the Moors to restore the Alcazaba, which is the next stop on your tour. This impressive building, constructed mainly in the 11th century, was the palace/fortress of the ruling Muslims. Continuing on your tour, you'll see the Catedral de la Encarnacion , Bishop Square, and the Paseo del Parque , before returning to Marina Square. Located approximately 19 miles (30 km) north of Malaga in the direction of Antequera, El Torcal Natural Reserve is home to some of the most beautiful and impressive karstic limestone landscapes in Europe. One hundred million years ago, the whole area was below sea level. Then, the Earth crust's violent movements forced the land upward into hills and mountains. The limestone still kept its layered horizontal formation. Beacuse of this, over the course of time, the rain and the wind have been able to chisel away at these layers to form incredible shapes. You will board your motor coach for a 1.5-hour drive to El Torcal Natural Reserve. Then, you will visit the center of El Torcal and learn about its history by watching a 15-minute documentary. At this point, the trekking journey starts. It will take you over interesting valleys, linking up ascents and descents through a fascinating sector labyrinth. Once the route has finished, you will have time to taste Spanish tapas (tortilla and parma ham) and enjoy the viewpoint of Las Ventanillas that you will find next to the parking lot. Inside you will be seeing the Cathedral and Plaza de la Reina , the narrow streets of the Old Town and the Central Market, an enormous metal, ceramic tile and glass Art Nouveau building built in 1928, with its 1,300 stalls of fresh fish, meat and fruits, selling products from all over Spain. Then see the spectacular façade of the Silk Exchange, a late Valencian Gothic style civil building which dramatically illustrates the power and wealth of one of the great Mediterranean mercantile cities. It was built between 1482 and 1548, and declared an UNESCO site in 1996; nowadays it is one of the principal tourist attractions in the city. Then you will cross the "De la Mar" Bridge, heading to the "City of Arts & Science" complex (CAC), along the former bed of the River Turia, this complex was designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. The City of Arts and Sciences is a unique complex devoted to science, technology, nature and art joining together the Hemisfèric, the Umbracle, the Príncipe Felipe Sciences Museum , the Oceanogràfic and the Palau de les Arts. Bike by in the complex's gardens and once finished you'll drop your bikes off at the shop and will be taken back by motorcoach to the pier. Continue the route cycling along the greenway called "Ruta del Tren Petit ," which used to be a narrow-gauge railway line. Head north, where you'll cycle along agricultural roads. As a backdrop, appreciate les Gavarres, a mass of of hilly woodlands that is important for the production of cork. Cycle through the plain of the Empordà and finally arrive at the medieval village of Pals. Its old center is dominated by a Roman Tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries. You will find pebbled streets, half-point arches, facádes with ogive windows and stone balconies. The city wall has four square towers from the 4th century. From Pals you'll have great views to the rice fields of the Ter River plain and the Medes Islands in the sea. It is a popular summer resort and a hub for summer boat trips along the Calanques National Park and creeks . The village is known for the quality of its fish and other seafood; the sea urchins accompanied by Cassis white wine are a local delicacy. You will enjoy some free time during your visit in Cassis to do some shopping - arts and crafts merchants, boutiques and cafés fill the quays around the port of the village. You may want to stroll around the square admiring the designer boutiques, or try your luck with the slot machines at the Café de Paris Casino. Return to the pier or if you want to stay to explore more on your own, return to the ship at your leisure. You'll also step inside Messina's famous cathedral, almost entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1908. It features an interesting finely carved 15 th to 16 th century central doorway. The stately bell tower, 100 feet tall, holds the largest astronomical clock in the world. Its animated, mechanical statues are only seen at noon. And don't miss the Orion Fountain in Cathedral Square, adjacent to the duomo. Built in 1547, its polygonal basin portrays Orion - one of the legendary founders of Messina. Its scenic beauty and historical-artistic heritage makes Savoca, one of the most attractive and unknown places of Taormina. In a private house in the village, "Bar Vitelli," houses a collection of local artisans' tools and photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola shot scenes of "The Godfather II." After a typical refreshment begin a walking tour along the village's main street past two Churches of the 15th and 16th centuries, ( Santa Lucia and San Michele ) and to enjoy the view over the valley . Continue to Forza d'Agro, a 20-minute drive towards Taormina, a charming little village overlooking the Arab-Norman castle of Capo Sant'Alessio. Mt. Etna, a very active volcano, is the largest volcano in Europe at 10,723 feet and has erupted 130 times. Of great interest is the variety of landscapes and vegetation that can be found on the volcano's slopes. Your drive to Mt. Etna is along a coastal highway and through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves, passing through villages such as Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea. The scenery becomes more forbidding as you approach the Sapienza Refuge. You will see the city of Catania, overwhelmed by an eruption 300 years ago, and walk around Crateri Silvestri inspecting the lava flow from the eruption of 1983. These small craters are set amid bare fields of grey lava that stretch for miles. You will have free time to explore on your own and light refreshments before driving back to the pier. This tour by motorcoach will cross the plain of Laconia through its orange and olive groves, with the mighty Taygetus Mountain (7,897 ft.) in the background to arrive in Sparta , which today is a big, modern town. As the original Spartans cared little for buildings and lived a "Spartan" existence in barracks, their ancient architecture was simple and basic. Today, its scanty remains reflect little of Sparta's ancient renown. Four miles west however, sits the medieval town of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , with its churches and houses, monasteries and palaces lining the steep narrow streets. For 200 years, from the middle of the 13th century, this Byzantine town flourished. From the mid-15th century to the beginning of our century, the town was in constant decline, with the exception of a few years during which it was under Venetian control. However, the magnificence of the Byzantine architecture , remarkably preserved and sensitively restored, gives you the impression you are entering a whole different age. Please note: The site is located on a very steep hill so flat rubber shoes are recommended.
